The Amharic Fidel serves as an Abugida or Alphasyllabary, wherein each character is indicative of a syllable rather than a singular phonetic sound. This system comprises 34 consonant bases, which can be altered to represent one of seven vowels, culminating in approximately 238 distinct characters, alongside an additional 49 labialized sounds.

In the transliteration system, the apostrophe (') may denote a glottal stop independently, or when paired with other sounds such as (k') or (t'), it signifies "ejective consonants."

To facilitate learning, practitioners are encouraged to trace each letter and subsequently assess their progress through self-quiz methodologies. The syllable bases are categorized into two manageable lists to enhance the quizzing experience.
